Mac - Minecraft freezes just after sign in with a network Content Filter extension installed
I have just been testing Minecraft 1.18.32 prior to getting it installed on about 3600 Macs in my school district.
In my testing I found this new version of Minecraft is freezing just after sign in. I end up having to Force Quit the application. If I try running it again, it freezes again. Sometimes it freezes with music in the background playing, other times it will freeze on the screen saying it is downloading resources.
So far I've tried on the following Macs:
- 2021 MacBook Pro 14" with an M1 Pro CPU, running macOS 12.5
- 2018 MacBook Pro 13" with an Intel CPU, running macOS 12.5.1
- 2018 MacBook Pro 13" with an Intel CPU, running macOS 10.15.7
We have Sophos Endpoint Protection installed on all our Macs, which includes a network Content Filter with a System Extension. I found that if I remove Sophos, Minecraft starts working and I can sign in and run the application as normal. I then reinstalled Sophos, and Minecraft freezes after sign in once again.
With Sophos fully removed I have tried a different network monitoring/firewall application (Lulu: https://objective-see.org/products/lulu.html) which also includes a network content filter. Minecraft also freezes with that installed.
Doesn't seem to matter if I allow Minecraft through these filters or not, it just seems to not work with a filter installed. Even with Sophos temporarily disabled, but with the network filter installed (just not actively filtering anything), Minecraft freezes at sign in.
Removing or disabling part of our antivirus and content filtering solution is not an option on our large fleet of Macs.
Minecraft 1.17.132 works just fine, regardless of whether or not a Content Filter extension is installed.
