What's the deal with the dedicated server?
Hey. I've been using the old MinecraftEdu for a while now and my school is upgrading the O365 plan with one of the expected benefits to be having access to Minecraft: Education Edition.I've had a lot of success with the Java version and I'm starting to invest time into transferring worlds to the new version. The way we've been running it is to have a dedicated server so students can access the worlds from home if they need to, and it also avoids any networking restrictions between staff/student machines.
However, I've taken a look at the posts on this topic so far and this is what I've established.
1) You can't do it 'yet'
2) You used to be able to do it but only if you had Azure. I successfully ran a server on Azure so I know this was working.
3) Now you can't do it on Azure.
Can someone in the know actually tell me: What is the plan for dedicated servers? I don't want to get our 3000 students MC:EE licenses if they can't be used. I know they used to work fine on Azure so what's the deal?
Don't say "we are working on it" - that was already said a year ago.
Surely, someone has a timeline?

Thank you for posting Grant.
The Minecraft: Education Edition Dedicated Server does not support the Back to School Update released on 8/15/19.
This pilot program generated many useful insights and feedback that our team will use to design future classroom-friendly features, as we continue working to understand how to best meet our customers’ needs for cloud-based servers for multiplayer.

Grant, I’ve had the same question and look forward to hearing the reply!

Hi Kyle. Your response is an exact copy of one that I received from a different person (Sean) over the support line.
Firstly - I don't want cloud-based servers. I want a dedicated server software - the very same that came with the older MinecraftEdu, and is also available for general bedrock servers.
Your response didn't include a date. My school is about to upgrade all the licenses to include Minecraft:EE with the expectation that Minecraft:EE should be better than MinecraftEdu. This doesn't appear to be the case and I need a clear outlook to provide before we take the plunge.
Can you not just upgrade the dedicated server to support the new release, and then provide that to teachers? That'll also give you instant feedback, rather than forcing schools to buy compute time on Azure.
As requested originally, do you have an expected date that a dedicated server will be available?

Hi Grant,
We are not compatible with dedicated server software at this time. Unfortunately, I do not have a date to share at this time.
Apologies for any inconvenience.
Thank you.
