This may have occurred when the update to the device took place. After Windows updates programs and files can be removed by that process. When you reference imports failed, is this from an external source or a local file from the device? If it's from the device, the update may have corrupted the world you are trying to import. If these are Windows devices, try using a restore point to see if the world files can be recovered.

I don't know if this will prevent all possible issues here but having students export their worlds regularly (to save as backups) like after any session that considerable work has been done, and saving them to their onedrive or a removable drive.  Should hopefully at least let them recover most of the work if anything goes wrong.

We have found the issue to be with the updating of the app so we know that is why the world's were lost. My next question is, if the student exports the world and they are in an outdated version of Minecraft, when they receive the new update and they go to import the world back in will that world fail to import? Can you explain the restore points a little further? Our students are exporting to OneDrive so it is cloud based.

The restore point is a Windows device feature that allows users to revert everything on the device to an earlier time. This can be a day ago or a month, all depends on how you use the restore point feature. This process can restore lost files in most cases. If an older world is used on a newer client, most times it should work. The issue mainly occurs if you use a world on a newer client and then try to play that same world on an older client it will fail. It might also fail to import if you have used blocks and other mods in the world that is not supported in the newer client.
