Outdated Server
I have multiple students unable to join a multiplayer game in my classroom. They keep receiving the message: outdated server. We tried deleting and re-installing the game but that doesn't seem to have helped.

Hi - You need to update Minecraft on your computer and possibly your iPads / other devices. I wish Microsoft wouldn't break Minecraft in the middle of the school year and give us a message like "outdated server" which is difficult to understand. "Update Required" would be ideal.

Thanks, that's helpful. Do the students need to update there versions, or is it an issue with the account hosting the game? Also, is updating something we can do in the game, or is it just a matter of deleting the old version and downloading/installing a new one?

It depends on how your devices are managed. If you are using managed computers or iPads, you probably need to have your admin push the update. Our iPads usually automatically update.

Hi there Pierce Wade. You do have the option to manually install it as well from our download page:
https://education.minecraft.net/get-started/download/
If you go this route I recommend backing up your worlds as shown in this guide:
However, as Rob Keith mentioned, it is strongly suggested you contact your IT admin first, as they may have a process for pushing updates to devices.
