So, I have been looking into this a bit more. There is a note in the tutorial. It seems rather obscure to me, because ISTM that your player should be already standing in the middle of the aquarium at the time, but the note says in step 2:

Note: Make sure you're standing in 1 block hole in the ground when you run this. If you're on an edge, the water will spill over and break your bowl.

It is a bit nonsensical, because 1. if you should do this, you should be doing it in step one. and 2. the errors I get are not just a perfect aquarium with broken walls, but water misplaced. (IOW, a two glass block wide wall on one side.

However, not one to miss a chance for a fix, I have been trying it out. It is true that if you start from the very first step in a one block hole, you have an aquarium two blocks into the earth, but a seemingly 100% success rate.

A two block hole is unpredictable, because if you are not completely snug against one side, it fails again.

Screenshot added for effect. lol =D
