We have released a hotfix (v1.17.31) on Chromebook, Windows, and Mac which once downloaded, should fix this issue for a majority of devices.

The hotfix for iOS will roll out later this week. Thank you for your patience in this. View this link for info about how to update your Minecraft: Education Edition. If your issue persists past the hotfix, please let us know in the threads of this post.

My students also lose connection to the server when they play in windowed mode and toggle to see the browser where the online class is located.

Thanks for reporting this issue.  Could you let us know a couple of things to help us troubleshoot this issue:

    • What type of device are you using?
    • What OS are you running on the devices?
    • Can you provide a screenshot or the exact text of the error you see?

I have not had the problem of being disconnected due to minimizing the window, However I have noticed that Minecraft doesn't seem to like being minimized.  I try to switch windows instead of minimizing windows whenever I can since it is much quicker and I don't need to wait for the screen to re-load the way it does when I forget and minimize Minecraft.

If the task bar isn't accessible you can try alt+tab to cycle between the open windows.  Hold Alt and hit tab till you get to what window you want to be on.

I don't know if that will fix your issue but worth a try!

Thanks Aleece Landis this is great advice!  Our engineers were able to duplicate the issue and are looking into it.  In the meantime, I would absolutely second what Aleece mentioned above.  Have your students switch windows instead of minimizing when they are actively playing Minecraft: Education Edition.

Any updates on this.  It is really annoying when some one forgets and accidentally minimizes instead of switching windows.

Any updates on this?  It is rather annoying when trying to multitask.

This is behavior we've unfortunately inherited from the latest version of Bedrock Minecraft.  We've filed a bug with the responsible team.  You can also search for and file a community bug on the main Minecraft site:  Minecraft Feedback
