Thanks for reaching out with this. Are they trying to use MakeCode, or Tynker or?

Thanks for that. This isn't something we are used to seeing, can we get a screen shot or short video of what is happening?

Also the developers are asking where in the world you are so we can see if there is a local issue.

Hi Adam, I teach with Victor (same cohort but different classes, same model chromebooks) and am having the same problem with at least 1/3rd of my students. Below is a screenshot from one of my students. We are based in Melbourne, Australia.

Thanks Simon; I don't have a screenshot ready to go, but this is exactly what my students were getting (and if/when code-builder does actually come up, it doesn't have any effect on the MC world when you try run the code)

As said, it only seems to be affecting some students.

We're in remote learning mode at the moment, so diagnosis is hard.

Could it be a network issue (I'm presuming that Minecraft makes a network connection to a MakeCode server on the Internet somewhere)? Is there a way to determine what MakeCode server MCEE is trying to connect to, and isolate if the student's machine can contact it?

I'm thinking I'll try Tynker with affected students

Hi Oscar, that is is not really an option for most of our students who only have access to their Chromebooks.

So should code connect work on the android app for chromebooks? I didn't think it was available at all. Getting the same message about downloading the app but I assumed the app doesn't exist for chromebooks. Is it planned for the future? Soon?

Code builder does work on Chromebooks, but our experience is that it is inconsistent enough (due to the aforementioned problem) to make it unusable in the classroom. I'm uncertain if Microsoft is taking the issue seriously or not, but it may be as they are unaware of the spread of the problem, so I would suggest submitting a help request.

It's all working now after reinstalling the app. Going to try a few more reinstalls to see if certain conditions affect things. I have a vague recollection I was logged into the code builder website as a different user before I installed Minecraft.

Hi John Brown and Victor Rajewski,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience here - getting into this state makes it impossible to do any coding in MakeCode and it's difficult to correct, so I appreciate how this bug is making any MakeCode based lessons challenging on Chromebooks. I'd also like to personally apologize about our delay in responding on this thread.

We are actively working with the MakeCode team to resolve the underlying problem and as you noted the error message that is displaying is inaccurate. You do not need Code Connection to use MakeCode on Chromebooks and actually it's not even possible to install it on Chromebooks. Until we resolve the bug, the best solution we can offer is to check that the Storage setting is ON and to clear the Device Storage (by uninstalling and reinstalling or by using the Chromebook Storage settings to clear it) when this error occurs.

Thanks again for reporting the issue and being patient with us as we work with MakeCode to figure out what's happening and fix it.

Aloha e Victor Rajewski, John Brown, and Micah-M,

I have at least one student so far with this same issue on a Chromebook. Most of our students have school provided laptops with Windows 10 ... but many have Chromebooks too. I have yet to learn if it is 100% of my Chromebook users with this problem or just the one or a few. I have instructed one student to try the fix you suggest Micah-M .... I really hope that can fix the issue immediately because my whole syllabus for middle school computer science this semester is rooted in the MCEE CS lessons. I will post anything we learn along the way here and continue to check back here for updates from others. Mahalo everyone for sharing, we will get there!

    Ke aloha,
    Cody

Victor Rajewski John Brown Cody Lestelle Simon Tyler -

Earlier today MakeCode published a change to that we believe should completely resolve this. From our testing we believe you shouldn't even need to uninstall/reinstall or clear storage for it to begin working. Could you please take another look on the Chromebooks and let me know if you are still seeing the "Minecraft not connected" error message?

If you are still seeing it, please try reinstalling Minecraft: Education Edition and resetting MakeCode by going to minecraft.makecode.com in a browser, pressing the cog/settings button in the top right and choosing Reset (NOTE: Following these steps will delete your worlds from Minecraft and your saved projects in MakeCode, so we strongly recommend exporting Minecraft worlds and MakeCode projects before following these steps).

If by some chance you are still seeing these errors after following those steps, it means that there is some other issue that we didn't find ourselves and we'd be happy to work with you to figure out what's going on and fix it.

Thank you for providing the feedback, helping us troubleshoot the problem and being patient with us as we worked to a solution!

    Thank you,
    Micah
