I was planning on having my students build a model of our school and use it as a lesson on the coordinate system to relate to what they were learning in math class. When I started laying it out however, I quickly realized that the way the coordinates work in Minecraft is TOTALLY different than what is taught in math.
First of all, I realize this would be a major change to the game, but it would be really cool if the x and y values represented the horizontal plane in the game, with z representing height. This would allow students to actually graph on the ground and practice with ordered pairs just like in math. I tried using the current system to graph on a horizontal plane (as if working on a whiteboard), but then was not able to place blocks at any negative values for y... which is an important skill to learn in math.
Again, I realize this could create a ton of issues with current worlds and command blocks referencing existing coordinates, but if there was a way to convert to a system that matched math it could create a ton of opportunities to use Minecraft in Math class.
