When will Minecraft: Education Edition get the latest Bedrock features?

  • Updates and a little Feature

    Pavel Smith

I think Minecraft education edition should be the latest version of the full Minecraft bedrock (1.16). Also, whenever a player throws a snowball at a mob or player they should be able to throw the snowball at them instead of throwing the snowball at the side of the player or mob just to hit them.0

I am a frequent user of Minecraft Education Edition and I would be very happy if the update could do the following:

    • ability to import education edition into java edition easily without comprimise
    • use the same command formats as java
    • make the updates come up to 2 weeks after java updates
    • just make the whole thing more like java

As the Bedrock/Java teams roll out exciting new features in Minecraft, our team needs some time to look over and understand how we can implement these new features in Minecraft: Education Edition. Our version of the game has unique features for use in the classroom and our team works to make sure any new features will be compatible with them. As such our version of Minecraft is typically about one update cycle behind the Bedrock/Java versions. When we have information on our next update we will be posting it on our official website!

Wow.  I really can't believe what I am reading.  How about, thanks Devs for creating a cool tool for me to use in my classrooms.  Even though I would love to have it up-to-date with the other versions, I completely understand the delay.  Do you have a time frame for when it will be updated to 1.15 (Nether Update)?

Once again I appreciate what you have done to provide me with a tool to teach my students how to program in Javascript and now Python while my students can have fun in a game they have been playing for most of their lives.

OK, but this is nether update and if the nether update is in bedrock and Minecraft education edition is technically bedrock with education, then why can't we have all the updates? And please I want everything to go to my off hand and I can use it. AND just please add all the updates, there are so many cool blocks we can't have because there is no update in Minecraft education edition.

Ok, I know that this is Minecraft EDUCATION edition, and I also know that the updates are one update cycle behind from Java. But what I do want to know if the nether update will come at the same time as the caves and cliffs update for Java. If it doesn't come out the same day, when do you plan on updating it?

Great new everyone! The update of Minecraft: Education Edition to the latest Bedrock version is in progress right now! Once it's released, it will include all of the new features added to Bedrock in version 1.16 and 1.17 including the additional features for Structure Blocks. We know it's been a long wait, but we are working on it right now. What are you most excited for, and how will you integrate this for your lessons?

Could you please add the Curse of Binding and Vanishing Enchantments to MinecraftEE?

These are really helpful for teachers to control items and equipment better with students and will solve a lot of problems in lessons and teamwork minigames.

Also more scoreboard functionality would literally open up the sky in terms of tools for creating minigames and lessons.

Hi, @... I am getting the impression you are lovin' Minecraft Bedrock edition! =D

Of course, if it is ~all~ Bedrock, it wouldn't have cool EDU features that are custom made to help teachers like me be able to make lessons for my class a little more easily. But I would like to understand what you are most excited about in your suggestion.

The logo would need to be different so people know what version they are using, I'm guessing, but is it the typeface or style, or the background you like better? The splash screens are more interesting to you? If you could pick the three most important things, what would they be?

    -1
  • I think I can speak for most of us... just add the .Edu features to standard Bedrock... people are sick of explaining to their students why the features they play at home aren't available.

There is no need or demand for a special edition of Minecraft... education licencing can be done like any other MS product...

It's just ridiculous. We want to host our worlds on private servers. We want to be able to use up to date add-ons... You're literally holding educators back. As a matter of fact, I tend to use Bedrock more these days... if you allowed me to use URLs in NPCs in Bedrock I doubt I'd use MCEdu at all.

Chalkboards, in-game access to Code Connection, URLs in NPCs and the portfolio... there's nothing else. I created a letter and character block add-on for educators and can't use it because we still don't have experimental mode...

    Listen to us!

    0
  • @deborah alexander... why do we need different editions? Why not just put the 'cool' edu. features in Bedrock? Why would that be a problem for you?

    0
  • The same goes with MarketPlace... I've made a tonne of lessons with maps I've purchased from Marketplace... field trips to the zoo... farming... cities, transport... it goes on and on... the learning opportunities are endless... but millions of teachers are denied the opportunity to use these maps... creators are denied a market... it's nonsense.

Thanks for engaging on this, Anthony (Mr Tony) Bryant although I don't pretend to understand all of the mechanics that go into creating Minecraft additions, I do know that there can be conflicts between the implementation of the different features. I also believe that there are features that are "locked down" if you will, that are limited, because of the educational environment. Again, I'm not an expert at this stuff, but my impression is that in order to have the freedom to add features that keep a Minecraft world building experience available for the kind of servers and school use environment that is needed around the world, and to add the extra features that improve it for teachers, that it is not just a simple overlay of code.

Just to be clear, I am not speaking for anybody and I do not know any details about this. I'm just giving my impression. I will say that I have experience in other game making environments, and it is difficult to bring retail game making environments into schools. They use platforms that are inappropriate for schools, or they have content that is not easily translated into a school, or they have an open door to materials that are unsuitable to a school.

I'm just tossing these as ideas out there. I could be completely off-base. I don't see anything wrong with having a custom featured version. I don't see why this is a bad thing. If your school district is happy to use the bedrock version that I don't see why that's bad. I think that's super that you're using materials that work in your environment.

I think what the EDU version provides is a good thing and a helpful thing. That's just my take, and I do really enjoy it myself. I'm not trying to defend an implementation in particular but I will say that I do enjoy having an education minded version myself.

Tossing in some IT perspective, particularly on the security and privacy pieces.

I would caution the idea of using Bedrock or Java in the classroom. Education edition limits students from being able to connect to students outside of their domain. Bedrock or Java would be a free for all (in more ways than one) with students also being able to connected to anyone around the world without restrictions.

I could see some major immediate negative implications of this right away.

Education Edition is also setup for easy mass deployment (something we IT guys appreciate). Java and Bedrock were not setup for this is mind.

You won't win much support in IT or your among your security or privacy officers pursuing this route. Education Edition is hands down the way to go and won't raise a bunch of red flags.

From a mentor perspective, students ask me all the time in workshops why they don't have access to all the latest and greatest blocks. Simply put, I tell them: "Education Editions primary motivation is to put Education related elements first. There's a lot that goes into it's development and it's developers are working very hard to keep the product tuned to Education as well as making it as stable as possible and able to run all the lessons and activities that have already been produced (compatibility). Waiting for all the new swag is of course a little frustrating but, generally we do most of it eventually". Students I've worked with understand this when I put it this way, and I usually follow it up with a fun breakout discussion about what kind of features they would love to see.

We are happy to see how much you've been enjoying 1.16 and 1.17 in Bedrock and want to say we are as excited as you about all the new features. We are sorry about the delay for 1.16 and will do our best in the future to stay closer to Bedrock's current version. I'm happy to say we are working right now to get Education Edition onto version 1.17 and making sure all of the Education features work correctly with both the Nether and Caves & Cliffs part 1.

@... and Anthony (Mr Tony) Bryant thank you both for providing feedback. I want to assure you that we are constantly reading the comments on this site and incorporating them into planning for future updates. While we unfortunately can't do every item that's asked, and it sometimes it takes longer than we'd like to complete them, we truly value your thoughts and suggestions and do our best to incorporate as many as possible into updates.

I can also hopefully offer some insights into why Education Edition is different than Bedrock. Deborah and Dan made some great observations - it comes down to the fact that Education Edition is designed to be used by teachers and students in a school setting for educational purposes while Bedrock is designed to be used by an individual as entertainment. That results in a number of differences, like making sure that all the content that appears in the Library is educational, to having different permissions for teachers and students to only allowing multiplayer between people in the same educational environment. Additionally, app stores have different requirements for educational applications and consumer games so in some cases we aren't event allowed to have the same features in Bedrock and Education Edition.
