I am a school Systems Administrator for a huge 2000+ student campus. Over the last few years MCEE has been a valuable tool in the classroom. This year since MCEE is now included with 365 A3 we have been asked to roll MCEE out site wide to all students. every subject teacher is excited, and each subject has seeming found a way to integrate MCEE into the classroom.

However, the one thing that is needed most is not available, that of course being dedicated servers. The staff have seen the massive achievements people have made in Java & Bedrock, huge, massive cities with glorious buildings that really show off a servers creativity and dedication. This is the kind of community we wish to push and promote allowing for students to attend various clubs where they can contribute to one huge everlasting world. A place where students can be inspired by each other and get encouraged to build bigger and better things, where teamwork is encouraged and most importantly students can get a real rewarding feeling. This goes for staff as well; we want to dive in and see what the kids build and show what we can build to them and each other.

As of right now, none of this is possible and that is a huge let down. In previous years we were able to host MCEE servers from the Bedrock server platform. When is MS going to realise that they are disappointing millions of children across the planet. Especially dis-advanced children who might not have access to play MC at home and will never know the amazing experience that is MC, an experience that literally taught me vital skills like socialising and teamwork, during my own younger years.

  • It's been a while since this has been posted on, but please add this feature, or add some way to host your own cloud servers, even if custom code is required. An always-on server would be a massive help and given that it's already available in other editions of Minecraft, it feels like it should be added to Education by now. Would be a great addition to the 1.20 update.

Yes, and yes.   My thoughts exactly:

    1.  Let us host a server without joining the session (drags resources on the server)

    2.  100 player limit

For anyone who wants to have a dedicated server now, I was able to get the job done, but my VM needed to have a lot of resources. So .... overspec your server and then do the following:

    1.  Install the app on the server

    2.  Log in to the server with a service AD account

    3.  Log into the app with a service Minecraft account and host the server

    4.  Press "T" to open the chat window, leave the app open and close your remote connection to the server

I have been doing this for a couple of weeks.  Had to reload the servers once so far.  Every time you reload the server, the join codes and link will change.

For my teachers, I made an intranet webpage where I can past the links and screenshots of the join codes.  Whenever I reload the server, I will need to update the links and join codes.  But that way I don't need to keep communicating with the teachers.

So far it's getting the job done, at the expense of a few extra imaginary processors (4 sockets with 2 cores each) and 32GB memory.  :)

It makes me very happy to see that this feature is listed as Planned now. Sincerely appreciated. Looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!

Incredible David Eichler , thank you so much. You have inspired me to continue to persevere with this.

Kyle , this has been going on for 2 YEARS now.

This is what you and Microsoft are holding back.

Hmm... yeah its been a long time. It would be nice to see a standalone server app for MC:EE.

So I'm just going to point this out.  When Minecraft was under the EDU tag, they had a the ability to launch a server and then run it separate from the application. https://www.instructables.com/Starting-A-MinecraftEdu-Server/

This is kind of frustrating because myself as a teacher, I have to be at the school teaching but student's can't connect based on the firewall and how the subnetting works within the district.

What should be developed is something that already exists for Java edition is a separate server launcher application which doesn't need a sign in but only runs as a command line prompt.

I mean I would also be down for it if they made the server client tied to something that only let verified teachers use it.  When I saw that they originally had a server client for back in 1.6.4 and then got rid of it, that is frustrating.  I can run a dedicated server for Java and bedrock but can't for Minecraft EE.

Or a quicker option, a person who is listed as a teacher could be logged in on 2 different computers but only one character within the world.  That I feel under the current coding, would be easier to do.

Yes please. And it should run on other operating systems than windows.

So I was looking around and came across this.

Looks like it is using the bedrock server hosting tool. I am gonna try hosting a server and joining it through MC:EE

Edit: Doesn't look like it works. I tried using the IP method but it just says "Unable to connect to the world"

We seriously need this. Why is this not a feature?

Is there any update on this?

As the person responsible for our District's Network/Firewall, I see the benefits of using Minecraft in Education. We have numerous Teachers who are fluent in teaching with Minecraft, come to us wanting to get a server/realm setup.

The basic MM:EE software does not work to support this.

Why can't we get a VM that I can host in our environment, where I can secure it and lock it down. Opening up a port to the Internet to the Teacher's laptop is not something that I want to do.

if is possible can i join, i mean am not much help but i would like to give you guys ideas. The Deticated Servers will really bring the community together, with lots of new ways to teach, and more possibilities.

We can even have like a Student Tournaments, each school will chose 5 students and they will go head to head with other students from other schools. like a team work challenge and a PVP challenge

it will really change how students and teachers play Minecraft EDU

Minecraft education most definetly needs realms or a server where the host doesn't need to be on the world. It would help progression in the world this would help so many teachers, and students can work on projects anytime they want without waiting for their teacher to open the world. This would make getting projects done much quicker.😀 I've been waiting for this feature for too long. We would also like to know how far the minecraft education team is in making this a feature

yea it would make it so much easier for people just to hop on the servers when they have the time to. don't the bedrock and java versions already have dedicated server hosting? wouldnt it be practical to implement the hosting systems used in other version into mc edu

yea, the comment says they started exploring possibilities 3 years ago

If they would have the schools register their IP address scheme and only allow joins to the server from those IP addresses that match the tenants domain users for a specific time (utilizing something like Microsoft Bookings) then they could easily provide some server infrastructure dedicated to education in a secure manner that could be reserved easily by teachers.

I believe the issue is that there is no $$$ for this development and thus little traction to fix the problem.   Sad as engaging students through technologies they are interested in is how Microsoft will create a loyalty base with the next generation for their products and platform (Future investment)!

Just so you know, you can only play multiplayer on minecraft education edition with other people from your school or group where your account is from.  So even if your port forwarding for your device and education edition was set up for you to do it, it would still only work if both of your accounts are from the same school or group.

Also, the IP address that shows on your screen would only help you join eachother's worlds IF you are on the same network or wifi.  IP addresses that start with 10 or 192 are generally the private IP address behind your router or firewall.  That is the address you would need your parents to set up the port forwarding to in order to let someone from the outside connect to your world.  You would also need to find out your public IP address (have your parent check what is my IP to find out what that is.)  Finally, you should not post that information on a public forum since that is like giving hackers a ticket telling them where you are and what port is likely to be open.  Make sure you are only posting information to connect to your game in a private messaging application with your group like Teams or something of the sort.

Wondering if there is any solution to this yet. I am hoping to teach IRL soon but otherwise really want to engage a world for multiple classes so that we don't have to repeat or fear that students lose out because of teaching inexperience in Minecraft.

Here is my additional use case:
I would love to create a world, give another teacher some type of cut down edit access (but not creator ownership) so they can't delete a world but can go into a 'master' world I have created and work with their students. For example we have 7 classes (over 3 teachers) at year 7 level that I would like to step through the same world but with their class teacher.  I also teach with other teachers that are not digital tech teachers and whilst they might become skilled in this, they could delete things while learning commands that I don't want them too. It's hard to try and pair- teach remotely with minecraft because of this inability to create and access worlds online. Downloading worlds is frustrating.
Realistically isn't his just like a game that you play online (via steam or xbox etc) sure there are likely to be some things to download on a local environment but the play is with others online not in a hosted offline world. Yes being able to create worlds on school servers might also be an option but it still has limitations such as help desk support etc.

Can you please release the server by the end of this year. My school uses Minecraft Education a lot for school projects and stuff like that, so if servers get implemented in the game then it will be a lot easier to work as a group and collaborate at school. Every time I want to join my friend's world while I am on the same internet as them there is always some connection problems and if there were servers the process of joining worlds will be a lot easier even if you weren't in the same connection as them.

If Microsoft is incapable of bringing a dedicated Minecraft:EE server program to life, could each education edition subscription be accompanied by a Java edition login such that we educators can set up our own dedicated servers with proven tech.... 2+ years is too long...

I would like you to provide an implementation of Minecraft: Education edtion regarding servers as soon as possible.

Currently, the specification is that no one will be able to connect after 4 or 5 days, so we are using Power Automate Desktop (PAD) to automatically restart M:EE.

And although I use PAD to share the join code and join URL via OneDrive or Google Drive to simplify the connection, PAD sometimes fails to restart due to many uncertainties.

Furthermore, we also need to maintain Remote Desktop connection using Raspberry Pi from remote to keep PAD running. This is no longer a minecraft server.

I would like the development team to provide the server implementation as soon as possible.

Dedicated server software already exists for Bedrock Edition (not as good/flexible as the java version but it exists.)

Therefor it should be totally possible to adapt that version of the server software to support education edition with it's added security features.

I believe I heard that for a while in the past there was some sort of pilot program education edition server available on Asure but apparently that closed some time ago and I've not heard any further details about that.

We still eagerly await updates about dedicated server capability for Education Edition.  It would really be helpful to many teachers and school groups.

I agree! I have tried hosting a world with 18 students (small computing class) and my Minecraft then gets stuck with a loading screen but my students can still play so I let them go.

I really need the ability to host a server so that I can actually navigate the world and police my students as well.
